Avatar Flight of Passage at Disney's Animal Kingdom is widely considered one of the best theme park rides ever built. This 3D motion simulator puts you on the back of a banshee (mountain banshee or ikran) for a breathtaking flight over the alien world of Pandora. The combination of 3D visuals, wind, mist, and scent effects creates an incredibly immersive experience. It is the signature ride of Pandora — The World of Avatar and a must-do at Disney World.

Flight of Passage Height Requirement

The minimum height requirement for Avatar Flight of Passage is 44 inches (3 feet 8 inches / 112 centimeters). Guests sit on individual bike-like seats and lean forward while a back restraint secures them in place. The 44-inch minimum ensures riders are tall enough for the leg and back restraints to function correctly. Note that Flight of Passage also has an informal size consideration — the ride seats have leg and shin restraints that may not accommodate all body types, though there is no posted weight limit.

Height Conversion

44 inches equals 3 feet 8 inches, or 112 centimeters (1.12 meters). Most children reach 44 inches between ages 5 and 7. At Disney World, 44 inches also unlocks Space Mountain, Expedition Everest, and Mission: SPACE Orange — making it a major milestone height.

What to Expect on Flight of Passage

Flight of Passage is a 3D motion simulator, not a traditional ride. After an elaborate queue through a bioluminescent cave and a DNA-matching pre-show, guests straddle individual bike-like seats in a theater. A back restraint lowers, and you are immersed in a stunning 3D flight over Pandora. You will feel wind in your face, mist from waterfalls, the breathing of the banshee beneath you, and even scents from the Pandoran landscape. The flight is smooth and graceful — there are no drops or jolts, making it suitable for riders who are uncomfortable with traditional coasters. The ride experience lasts about 4.5 minutes.

Tips for Riding Flight of Passage with Kids

Flight of Passage remains one of Disney World's highest-demand attractions. Tips for families: Use Lightning Lane if available — wait times regularly exceed 60–90 minutes during peak hours. Rope drop (park opening) is the best time for standby. The ride itself is gentle motion-wise, but the 3D screen and forward-leaning position may cause motion sickness in some guests. If your child is prone to motion sickness, consider Na'vi River Journey in Pandora instead (no height requirement, gentle boat ride). The pre-show involves a medical scanner effect that very young children might find intimidating, but it is completely harmless.

Similar Rides

If your child loves Flight of Passage, they will enjoy Soarin' Around the World at EPCOT (40 inches) — a hang-glider flight over world landmarks using similar screen technology. For another immersive motion experience, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Hollywood Studios (40 inches) offers a completely different but equally impressive experience. At Universal, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (48 inches) uses similar motion-base technology.
